“Aavasam Thedunna Athikaayan” – The Inspiring Story of the Crested Serpent Eagle at Uravu Bamboo Grove

Uravu Bamboo Grove recently hosted a captivating nature programme titled “Aavasam Thedunna Athikaayan” (The Giant Searching for a Home), presented by renowned ornithologist N. V. Krishnan. The session brought together nature enthusiasts, and members of the local community for an unforgettable journey into the life of one of the Western Ghats’ most magnificent birds of prey—the Crested Serpent Eagle.
Drawing from years of patient field observation, N. V. Krishnan shared the remarkable life story of the Crested Serpent Eagle through nearly 100 photographs, each captured by him in its natural habitat. The images documented the eagle’s entire life cycle—from nesting and hatching to the growth of the chicks, their first flights, and eventual independence. Every photograph reflected not only the bird’s behaviour but also the dedication, perseverance, and passion required to document such intimate moments in the wild.
A significant part of the session focused on the growing threats posed by climate change. Krishnan explained how changing weather patterns, habitat degradation, and environmental disturbances are affecting the breeding success and survival of the Crested Serpent Eagle. The programme concluded with an engaging interaction where participants discussed bird conservation, habitat protection, and the role individuals can play in safeguarding biodiversity.
